In this post, Today I am discussing issue facing with Window cannot access the specified, device and file error message. The reason for this error is you may not have permission to access the item. Due to this when you try to run window 10 troubleshooter through the setting of Windows for specific issues. Then a pop up occurs which refers to the msdt.exe file in the system32 folder.

What is msdt.exe?

MSDT.EXE file is the software component & it is located in the system32 folder. If it is located somewhere else, then it could possibly be malware or infected files, then you need to scan with your security software. This process is called the Diagnostic Troubleshooting wizard. It is also a Component of windows files that launch Microsoft Distributed transaction Service.

The window cannot access the specified, device or file – Fix MSDT.exe Error

Step 1 – Check your User Account Permissions

First Check your User Account Permission, and see if you have local Admin rights on your personal computer.
For check, Point mouse to Start > Settings > Accounts. Make sure you will see the Administrator under your user account name.

Step 2 – Then Run troubleshooter from an Administrator User account

Navigate to System 32 Folder, locate MSDT.EXE, press mouse right-click on it, and then check if you are able to use Run as Administrator, does it works? or if do you get a message –

Then Enter your Passkey which is provided by your Support Professional

Or, if you have a passkey, use it, or ask your support staff or admin.

Step 3 – Run the system file checker

For replacing the potentially corrupted system files, run the system file checker
Open the Process completes, then restart your PC, and check if you are able to successfully Run windows 10 troubleshooter.

Step 4 – Run DISM

Then Run DISM for repair windows system image & Windows Component Store & check if it helps.

Step 5 – Check the Error files log

After Run, troubleshooting reports you, log & other data which are saved in the following locations:

%LocalAppData%\Diagnostics: It contains the folders for the previously run troubleshooter.
%LocalAppData%\ElevatedDiagnostics : It contains the folders for each troubleshooter which was Run as Administrator.
